Yakusa Gangsters - 11x17 inch - $100

Tokyo, Japan. May, 2001.

I was working on a story on Japanese Yakuza gangs and was given an address in the city's notorious Kabukicho neighborhood where I would meet a local gang boss, "Agate-San", and spend several days photographing him for a story for Time Magazine. When my taxi pulled up at the address, I looked out the window and saw a line of young Yakuza underlings waiting in a line for the boss to arrive. I rolled down the window and shot 2 or three frames and couldn't believe my luck that I got what would be the opening shot the moment I arrived. Shot on Fuji Provia 100, scanned on Hasselblad Imacon scanner.
