In 1996 I traveled to a Khmer Rouge base across the Thai border for an interview with Ieng Sary, a former top Khmer Rouge leader, accused of committing one of the worst modern genocides. On assignment for Newsweek, we spent a day in the camp and I was able to briefly wander around unguarded to photograph solders.Here a Khmer Rouge solder takes a cigarette break.
